The famous wrestler-cum-actor, Dwayne Johnson was born on May 2, 1972, into a professional wrestling family. He is married to Lauren Hashian and has 3 children. Dwayne Johnson has won millions of hearts in his career as a wrestler and now an actor. Although his life was not always smooth sailing, he has come from a humble background to become a superstar, he is today.
Dwayne Johnson’s life was not always sitting on a mountaintop alongside the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Jackie Chan and Tom Cruise as one of the highest-earning actors. He did not always have a life of luxury. It is akin to the finishing move that wrestlers perform that get their fans on the feet. They see the result but not the years of hard work and practice that are behind perfecting it.
#1. The Journey
Dwayne Johnson’s million-dollar smile, and rippling physique have a fanbase of their own. From being a teenage delinquent to a football player, to becoming a wrestler and finally becoming the famous Hollywood actor it was a long and hard journey.
He has had several incidents and arrests that could have led his life into a completely different career path and might even have limited his career to the wrestling lifestyle. Wrestling is well known for ending the careers of countless wrestlers due to the demands of the road and the numerous injuries that they sustain.
One of the major misconceptions about The Rock is that he had a normal average childhood which is entirely untrue. Even though his father Rocky Johnson was famous at the time and a professional wrestler his life wasn’t smooth sailing. Rocky had his success in his lifetime but also had many affairs throughout the years. He was also arrested for allegedly raping a 19-year-old girl. Dwayne was only 14 at that time and had no clue how to manage the hardship he was thrown at and decided to train.
Rock mentioned this in his official Facebook page saying, “Started training hard at 14yrs old. Not for fame or a competition, but because we were evicted from our small apartment in Hawaii. I reeeeaaaaalllyy hated that feeling of helplessness and never wanted that to happen again. So, I did the only thing I could control with my own two hands in hopes that one day my family would never worry about being evicted again – I trained,”.
#2. What Kept Him Going
All this training did pay off for him though in high school. The school’s football coach Jodi Swick saw through his BS attitude and gave him a chance in the football team. Johnson had a knack for football and won a full scholarship from the University of Miami to play defensive tackle.
But his career in football was short-lived due to an injury. After graduating, he tried to restart his career but failed at the attempt. He had 7 dollars in his pocket which lead him to depression. He said “I found that, with depression, one of the most important things you could realize is that you’re not alone. You’re not the first to go through it; you’re not going to be the last to go through it… I wish I had someone at that time who could just pull me aside and [say], ‘Hey, it’s gonna be OK. It’ll be OK. I didn’t want to do a thing; I didn’t want to go anywhere. I was crying constantly. Eventually, you reach a point where you are all cried out.” He spent his time staying in his small apartment and cleaning.
He wanted to try entering into the wrestling business, but his father advised him against it as ‘the biggest mistake he will ever make’. But, this did not waiver his faith and he got trained by his reluctant father. This step he took was the beginning of his wrestling career. He made his debut in 1996 Survivor Series however initially things did not go as planned. The crowd wasn’t pleased with him, and things were not looking good for his career. Dwayne did not give up though, and he tried changing his attitude to more WWE Attitude, which turned the tide in his favour.
#3. The Attainment Of Success
Things finally looked good for from this point on, and now he is one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. Starting from a teenager who had no aim to become an actor with a net worth of $135 Million, his life story has been an inspiration to many. From a depressed boy who lived in a small apartment to becoming an inspiration for millions today, Dwayne Johnson has truly come a long way.
